Basey Banig Laptop Sleeves
Weaving is such a big part of our culture. All around the archipelago, the tradition of weaving is ever so present and this includes a community in Basey, Samar.
Basey is a municipality in Samar, Philippines - hit severely by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2014. It is known for its woven products such as the sleeping mat or locally known as “banig”. This ancient pre-colonial art has been handed down from one generation to the next through village housewives, known as “paraglara."
To help the city recover it's livelihood, innovations to applications of their famous banig material was made to increase demand for the product. One application is this laptop sleeve at 11”.
Made from “tikog”, a reed grass that grows in swampy areas along rice fields and used for sleeping mats or ”banig"; it now nods to the modern lifestyle of nomadic work habits as a laptop sleeve.
